LIGUE 1: CAN PSG STOP LILLE?

Lille and not PSG are the French Ligue 1 leaders going into the last three games of the season thus leading to the question of whether Lille can stay at the top at the end of the three games left to play in the top flight of club football in France this season.

PSG trail Lille by a single point going into the final three games and they could be four points adrift by the time face Rennes away from home on Sunday.

The French giants were knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday night at the hands of Manchester City but it could still be a good season if theycan retain their league title ahead of current leaders Lille. They also have the French Cup semifinal meeting with Montpellier on the horizon.

The Champions League exit at the hands of Premier League table toppers Manchester City is a bitter pill to swallow for PSG who were looking to qualify for another final after the one from last season.

PSG qualified for the Champions League final for the first time in their history last season after seeing off German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the semis only to fall at the hands of another German team. Bayern Munich won their final 1-0 courtesy the second half strike from former player Kingsley Coman.

Star players like Neymar and KylianMbappe were largely anonymous in that final played in Lisbon last year August.

Neymar and Mbappe also didn’t pull their weight enough in the first leg of their last four tie at home to Manchester City as the Citizens came from a goal down to win 2-1 and establish a lead ahead of the second leg at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City won the second leg 2-0 to move into the final via a 4-1 aggregate win.

Neymar was anonymous for that second leg, while Mbappewas left on the bench for the game as he was unfit after a calf problem.

PSG might need to win their remaining three games against Rennes, Reims and Brest to finish the season as Ligue 1 winners. On their part, Lille will win the Ligue 1 title if they beat Lens, Angers and St. Etienne in their final three games. Lille will render the results from the PSG games inconsequential if they win their matches.
