Vargas gave Chile the lead on 26 minutes in the Group A encounter. His goal gave Chile an halftime advantage at the expense of the Uruguayans but the two-time winners of the Copa America tournament could not hold on for the win thanks to the second half strike from Atletico Madrid hitman Luis Suarez. Ex-Barcelona star Suarez found the back of the net just before the halfway stage of the second half to ensure that his team didn’t follow up the 1-0 loss to Argentina in their last Group A game before the Chile encounter with another defeat against the Chileans.

With his goal against Uruguay, Vargas has now scored two goals in three games at the ongoing Copa America tournament in Brazil. He is one of three players on two goals at the tournament. The other two players are Brazilian star Neymar and Angel Romero of Paraguay.

Vargas scored his first goal of the tournament when he levelled proceedings for Chile in the second half after Barcelona skipper Lionel Messi had given Argentina the lead in the first half. His goal secured a 1-1 draw with Argentina. Messi scored the opener on 33 minutes before Vargas replied 12 minutes into the second half.

Paris Saint Germain (PSG) star Neymar has two goals in two games thus emerging as one of the leading goalscorers at the tournament. Neymar is the only player to maintain a record of scoring in each game at the tournament. The ex-Santos and Barcelona player would be hoping to continue his good form in front of goal when Brazil take on Colombia on Wednesday.
